Neurosurgeon, spine device innovator dies at 82

Walter Eckman, MD, a neurosurgeon who developed minimally invasive spine surgery technology and secured 20 patents related to spinal surgery products, died Sept. 24 at 82.

Dr. Eckman established a private neurosurgical practice in Sioux City, Iowa, in 1976. While there, he brought the first CT scanner into a local hospital, according to his obituary, published Sept. 30. 

He moved to Tupelo, Miss., in 1985 and practiced neurosurgery there until retiring in 2017. Dr. Eckman also founded a medical device company based on a minimally invasive spine surgery system he developed.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Eckman served in the U.S. Public Health Service at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.
