The 95-year-old retired neurosurgeon joined the West Virginia University Medical Center in Morgantown, in 1961. By 1970, the center appointed him the chairman of neurosurgery, a role he served in until 1985.

He performed more than 1,600 procedures utilizing small, angled electrodes for control triennial lesion — a technique which he developed. In 1994, he earned WVU’s Order of Vandalia award, which represents the highest university honor.

Dr. Nugent served as founding president of the West Virginia Neurosurgical Society as well as vice president of the Southern Neurosurgical Society.
