National search leads UC San Diego tapping Dr. Alexander Khalessi as neurosurgery chair: 5 notes

UC San Diego Health selected Alexander Khalessi, MD, to serve as its neurosurgery chair. He will also serve as chief of neurosurgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Here are five notes:

 

1. Dr. Khalessi is a clinical leader in complex neurovascular and oncologic services. He earned international recognition for developing surgical and catheter-based procedures for cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, carotid disease and brain tumors.

 

2. He previously chaired data safety monitoring boards and clinical events committees for FDA neurovascular device assessment. He also helped pioneer the first-in-man surgical case for endoscopic evacuation of hemorrhage and 4K-3D exoscope visualization in neurological surgery.

 

3. As an author of more than 115 peer reviewed papers and monographs, Dr. Khalessi served on the editorial board for the Journal of Graduate Medical Education and assisted in authoring the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s training milestones.

 

4. Dr. Khalessi underwent fellowship training at the State University of New York in New York City. He also served two terms as president of the San Diego Academy of Neurological Surgery.

 

5. Succeeding Bob Carter, MD, Dr. Khalessi will lead the 19 faculty, 14 residents, 16 staff and four clinical fellows that make up UC San Diego Health’s neurosurgery department.
