Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers in Cambridge developed an AI technique designed to match X-rays captured during surgery with a patient’s preoperative 3D medical scan.
The technique, called xvr, adapts to an individual patient in about five minutes and can match X-rays with 3D scans in a matter of seconds with sub-millimeter precision, according to a Sept. 16 news release.
Researchers tested xvr using data from five hospitals covering adult and pediatric patients. The technique significantly outperformed other AI-based methods in accuracy and robustness.
Researchers said the technology could support minimally invasive procedures and improve robotic surgery technologies. The research was published Sept. 16 in Nature.
