Researchers evaluated data from 1992-20005 from the National Inpatient Sample to assess how the surgeon/hospital volume impacted outcomes for lumbar spine surgery. Mortality was significantly lower in high-volume hospitals and among high-volume surgeons. The complication rate was only slightly lower in high-volume hospitals, but significantly lower among high-volume surgeons.
