Here are five key points:
1. Lourdes Joint & Spine Center was established last year to make spine and joint care more seamless. The new center cost more than $500,000, which included the new 12-bed inpatient unit as well as therapy gyms and classroom space, according to the report.
2. Lourdes Joint & Spine Center provides a comprehensive care for a wide range of musculoskeletal problems and offers total and partial knee replacements, total hip replacements, major back procedures and other joint- and spine-related procedures. It includes a multidisciplinary team of orthopedic surgeons, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, physician assistants, case managers, trainers and orthopedic technicians.
3. The center also includes an accredited 10-bed rehabilitation unit as well as mid-Columbia’s only Orthopedic Academy program, which provides information to total knee and hip replacement patients.
4. The center includes 16 orthopedic surgeons. They perform almost 1,000 orthopedic and spine procedures a year, more than any other local hospital, Lourdes officials told the Tri-City Herald.
5. Several hospitals and health systems have recently expanded their spine centers or created new ones. St. Cloud (Minn.) Hospital recently expanded its neuroscience/spine unit; Fort Myers, Fla.-based Lee Memorial Health System opened a new spine center and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton (N.J.) announced the establishment of the Center for Orthopedic & Spine Health.
