Here are four things to know:
1. Spine surgeons formed the society after meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, for a conference on spinal deformity surgery.
2. The conference discovered few professionals in Nigeria were training residents, leading to a lack of young physicians in the spine field.
3. Many residents with a spine focus train outside the country, and if they return, they find little support in resources or funding to start practices.
4. Spine surgeons founded the society in hopes of increasing awareness of spine surgery, and attracting young physicians to the field. The society may also help in building a strong residency program.
