Spinal cord implants applications are growing: 3 updates

Spine

Spinal cord implants have gained traction in recent months for their ability to relieve pain in patients.

Here are three ways neurostimulators have grown:

1. Nevro's Senza spinal cord stimulation received FDA approval for nonsurgical refractory back pain in January. The device was cleared for treatment of chronic pain associated with painful diabetic neuropathy in July.

2. Medtronic's Vanta spinal stimulator was cleared for treating chronic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy in January. The recharge-free device was first cleared for pain management in June.

3. A neurostimulation device developed in Sweden has helped three spinal cord injury patients stand, walk and swim again. Researchers Grégoire Courtine, PhD, and Jocelyne Bloch, MD, are working with Onward Medical, a company they helped found, to commercialize the technology.
