The Michigan Board of Medicine is investigating Avery Jackson, MD, who is accused of issuing questionable mask waivers to more than 90 students across Detroit, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Four notes:

1. The state medical board is concerned that Dr. Jackson had no physician-patient relationship with the students before issuing the school mask waivers.

2. Dr. Jackson allegedly issued the waivers online, and some were provided in exchange for positive Google reviews, according to the Press.

3. A birth certificate and "any medical reason" were the only requirements for obtaining a waiver, according to one parent's text message obtained by state investigators.

4. Dr. Jackson is CEO and medical director of Grand Blanc-based Michigan Neurosurgical Institute, which he founded in 2003. He specializes in complex spinal cases, brain and spinal tumors, head and spine trauma, as well as minimally invasive procedures such as vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty.
