New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System's Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance received a $2.3 million grant to support its spinal cord injury program, the health system said Sept. 20.
The five-year Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems grant was awarded by the National Institute of Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research. Mount Sinai's program is the first in New York to receive this grant, and one of 14 nationwide.
Mount Sinai's spinal program supports patients during all treatment phases.
Mount Sinai will use the grant to help its Icahn School of Medicine expand research into patient care. The healthy system will also collaborate with other centers on projects on the effects of spinal cord injuries on patients' livelihood and how interventions can affect neurological and functional recovery. One project includes evaluating the use of transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation to stabilize blood pressure after spinal cord injury.
