Neurosurgeon Anthony Virella, MD, has performed a disc replacement with M6-C on a patient who suffered a spine injury as a result of a motor vehicle accident.

The procedure addressed a traumatic disc herniation in the patient's spine. It was the first M6-C disc implanted for a personal injury victim in Ventura County, Calif., according to a May 5 news release.

"This sophisticated spine surgery is reason for those who suffer disc injuries as the result of car accidents, motorcycle accidents, slip and fall accidents, and other personal injuries to have hope for better days," Dr. Virella said.

Designed by Orthofix, M6-C has a cushion-like, viscoelastic core, according to the company. The technology is intended to mirror the movements and compression of a normal human anatomic cervical disc.

Earlier this year, The Spine Journal published a two-year study of the device, which found it to be safe, effective and noninferior to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion for the treatment of cervical disc degeneration.
