The addition of Sonia Eden, MD, could go a long way toward re-establishing Detroit Medical Center's neurosurgery residency program.

Dr. Eden was hired as chief of neurosurgery at DMC Harper University Hospital on Sept. 8, according to a news release.

A native of Detroit, she completed a minimally invasive spine surgery fellowship at Semmes-Murphey Clinic in Memphis, before practicing at Ascension Borgess Brain and Spine Institute in Kalamazoo, Mich., for the last 12 years.

She has expertise in complex spine surgery, sacroiliac joint surgery, endoscopic and minimally invasive brain surgery, as well as brain and spine tumor surgery.

In February, the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education denied DMC's appeal to keep its neurosurgery residency program after a former resident told the organization about alleged issues within the program.

The program, operated in conjunction with Wayne State University, lost its accreditation in June. CEO Audrey Gregory, PhD, RN, said in February that DMC plans to re-establish the program soon.
