Spine surgeon researchers analyzed articles about total disc replacement and found the top five reasons for complications.

The researchers examined the MAUDE database and Alternative Summary Reporting data files for procedures from January 2005 to March 2020. They looked into 1,347 entries for seven FDA-approved cervical disc replacement devices and tracked the reasons for complications. The researchers published their findings in The Spine Journal.

The top five reasons for cervical disc replacement complications are:

1. Implant migration: 25.2 percent
2. Insertion problem or failure: 23.3 percent
3. Neck pain: 15.2 percent
4. Heterotopic ossification: 8.1 percent
5. Radiculopathy: 8.1 percent

The top implant-related complications for each implant were:

1. Mobi-C: insertion problem or failure
2. ProDisc-C: implant migration
3. Bryan cervical disc: insertion problem or failure
4. Prestige cervical disc: implant migration
5. PCM cervical disc: implant migration
6. M6: implant migration
7. Secure-C: implant migration
