Spine

Here are nine spine and neurosurgeons making headlines this week:

Santa Rosa, Calif.-based neurosurgeon Thomas Keller, MD, was acquitted of four of the nine counts against him, which included the second-degree murders of two patients and recklessly prescribing medications to another patient. However, the jury was hung on the remaining five counts, which included the second-degree murder of two other former patients and recklessly prescribing medications to another two.

Michael Rimlawi, MD, Douglas Won, MD, and Shawn Henry, DO, were denied motions for a new trial in a $40 million kickback case after a Texas federal judge deemed their arguments meritless.

Phoenix-based Banner Health's Randall Porter, MD, created an app to bridge the communication gap between patients and their families during the coronavirus pandemic.

Amid the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, Srdjan Mirkovic, MD, of Northshore Orthopaedic & Spine Institute in Chicago and Brian Gantwerker, MD, of the Craniospinal Center of Los Angeles discussed the development of telemedicine in spine.

Dusty Richardson, MD, of Billings (Mont.) Clinic developed a durable, reusable plastic mask using 3D printer technology to address the nationwide shortage of personal protective equipment.

In the face of a personal protective equipment shortage, Rachel Joy Hunt, MD, a neurosurgery resident at Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System demonstrated how to produce surgical masks from materials at home.
