Colorado neurosurgeon to settle alleged kickback violations for $2.35M

William Choi, MD, will pay the federal government $2.35 million to settle claims that he violated the Anti-Kickback Statute and False Claims Act, 4 CBS Denver reports.

What you should know:

1. Federal investigators said Dr. Choi secretly ran two implant distribution companies between 2011 and 2015 that sold implants to three Colorado hospitals where he performed spine surgeries.

2. The distributors were not registered in Dr. Choi's name, but investigators discovered he controlled them.

3. Investigators were alerted to the scheme after a former employee of Dr. Choi's filed a whistleblower lawsuit in 2017. The employee will receive a portion of the settlement fee.

4. Dr. Choi did not admit to any liability as part of the settlement.
