Drs. Allen Sills, Kornelis Poelstra & more: 6 spine surgeons making headlines

Here are six spine and neurosurgeons making the news this week.

The NFL's CMO, Allen Sills, MD, praised the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz for reporting his concussion to officials during the playoff defeat to the Seattle Seahawks. Dr. Sills labeled Mr. Wentz's actions as "heroic" after bringing attention to the severity of concussions in the sport.

Kornelis Poelstra, MD, PhD, was reported to be the first spine surgeon on the West Coast to implant a Molybdenum-Rhenium rod in a patient during a spinal fusion. Molybdenum-Rhenium is designed with greater strength and fatigue resistance compared to titanium, cobalt and iron materials. 

BoulderCentre for Orthopedics & Spine in Boulder, Colo., added Patrick Curry, MD, to its surgical team. Dr. Curry specializes in treating cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine disorders.

Shafique Virani, MD, was appointed director of newly established biopharmaceutical company TauC3 Biologics, which is developing an immunotherapy to prevent the spread of neurodegenerative diseases.

Federico Vinas, MD, joined Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based AdventHealth Medical Group. Dr. Vinas has practiced in Daytona Beach, Fla., for more than 20 years, specializing in minimally invasive surgery, cervical artificial disc replacement, brain tumor and cervical arthroplasty.

Mercy Clinic Neurosurgery in Rogers, Ark., added Alejandro Castellvi, MD, who treats conditions such as stroke and adult scoliosis as well as serious neurological illnesses and injuries.
