Anthony Leone, MD, a Cheektowaga, N.Y.-based spine surgeon, was sentenced for two opioid abuse-related crimes Dec. 16, Buffalo Business First reports.

What you should know:

1. Dr. Leone pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance and making material false statements in September.

2. He was sentenced to two years of probation and three months of home confinement Dec. 16.

3. Dr. Leone's plea was part of a deal to help him avoid prison time.

4. Dr. Leone admitted to ordering and receiving bulk orders of opioids that he would take home and store for his own personal use. He'd then take the opioids for back pain from four different back surgeries. He went to rehab for his addiction, and then reached a deal with the Committee for Physicians Health to continue his practice.
