Here are eight spine and neurosurgeons making headlines this week.

Jeffrey Wang, MD, co-director of the USC Spine Center at Keck Medicine of USC in Los Angeles and president of the North American Spine Society spoke to Becker's about the future of endoscopic spine surgery in the U.S., emerging trends in regenerative medicine and the opioid crisis.

CHI St. Luke's Health — The Woodlands Hospital in Montgomery County, Texas, added Jeremiah Johnson, MD, to its neurosurgical staff. Dr. Johnson joined the neurosurgery division and will lead the stroke center. He is dual fellowship-trained in cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery and can diagnose and repair blood vessel disorders of the spine, brain and neck.

The spine and neurological surgery department at Mayo Clinic Health System's hospital in Eu Claire, Wis., welcomed Mark Pichelmann, MD, to its team. Dr. Pichelmann served as program director of neurosurgery at Mayo Clinic in Florida for over 15 years and is a former vice chair of its neurosurgery department.

Hamid Abbasi, MD, PhD, CMO of Inspired Spine, headquartered in Burnsville, Minn., is advocating for oblique lateral lumbar interbody fusion to be adapted more widely for lumbar pain conditions. He spoke to Becker's about a recent study he conducted, exploring OLLIF's efficacy, safety and outcomes.

Gerald Rodts, MD, professor of orthopedics and neurosurgery at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta and chief of the division of spine surgery at the university shared his insight on his rising elderly population and what lies ahead for outpatient spine surgery.

Meridian, Miss.-based Rush Health Systems added orthopedic spine surgeon Edward Smith, MD, to its team. Dr. Smith treats degenerative disorders of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, spine trauma and deformity. He completed fellowship training in orthopedic spine surgery at Brown University in Providence, R.I.

Dalip Pelinkovic, MD, a board certified orthopedic surgeon subspecializing in spine surgery with Suburban Orthopaedics in Chicago, spoke to Becker's about changes he'd like to see in spine and what trends he foresees developing in the field.
