Noted Philadelphia spine surgeon Dr. Denis Drummond dies

Retired Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Chief of Orthopedics Denis Drummond, MD, 84, died June 18 of heart failure, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Dr. Drummond earned his medical degree from Montreal-based McGill University Medical School in 1962. He completed his orthopedic training at the University of Toronto in 1968.

Dr. Drummond practiced at Shriners Hospital for Children in Montreal from 1970 to 1977, leaving for Madison-based University of Wisconsin, where he practiced from 1978 to 1985. Later in 1985, he joined Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

At CHOP, he was chief of orthopedics until 1996, when he stepped down from the post. He taught at Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine from 1985 until he retired in 2014.

The Scoliosis Research Society awarded Dr. Drummond its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 for his contributions to spinal deformity-related care.

Dr. Drummond was lovingly remembered by colleagues. His wife, four sons and 10 grandchildren survive him.
