Dr. Robert Heary becomes vice president of AANS: 5 things to know

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons named Robert Heary, MD, vice president. 

 

Five things to know:

1. Dr. Heary is a spine surgeon at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Medical School with a special interest in complex and reconstructive spine surgery. He focuses on deformity, spinal cord injury, spinal biomechanics and tumors.

2. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Heary is the director of two basic science laboratories: one focused on spinal cord injury and the other on spine biomechanics.

3. Throughout his career, Dr. Heary has served on the editorial boards of Neurosurgery, Clinical Spine Surgery, Spinal Deformity and World Neurosurgery. He also previously was on the editorial board of Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine.

4. Dr. Heary is vice chair of the NeurosurgeryPAC and secretary of the Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation. He spent 13 years as the New Jersey delegate to the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies.

5. He also has a passion for examining and addressing how major socioeconomic issues affect neurosurgery.
