Richard Wohns, MD, hosted the Annual Mazama Spine Summit in Winthrop, Wash., from Jan. 25 to 27. This year marked the 15th annual event, which continues to grow.

"Richard Wohns has done a magnificent job in building this summit," said Scott Becker, publisher of Becker's Healthcare. "It's an amazing event and mix of people that join this conference."

Dr. Wohns founded the summit as a minimally invasive and outpatient spine surgery conference to bring together top spine surgeons, physicians and clinicians for educational panel sessions and entertaining keynote speakers.

"The meeting began as a think-tank for around 20 surgeons interested in outpatient spine surgery and then grew into what Scott Becker has called the 'Davos of Spine.' Each year we continue to provide the latest developments in minimally invasive and outpatient spine surgery with the leading physicians in the U.S. and from around the world," said Dr. Wohns. "We also include a unique session on medical-legal issues, with both physician and attorney speakers."

The keynote speaker is typically a highlight of the event, and features presentations on non-medical and non-legal topics of human interest, including mountaineering, exploration, wildlife photography and innovation. John Kao, MD, a thought leader, advisor and author focused on innovation, business creativity, organizational transformation and emerging technologies, was the keynote speaker.

"I saw at a distance at first how the summit started to grow and it has exploded to what it is today, which is an incredible meeting. I look forward to planning it and being at the meeting itself every year," said Michi Carlson, Meeting and Special Event Coordinator, in a video tribute. "The familiar faces, the community, the camaraderie, is just incredible."

Dr. Wohns is also founder and president of NeoSpine in Seattle and Puyallup, Wash., as well as CMO for angelMD, a technology platform that connects medical startups with science investors, industry and physicians.

In addition to Dr. Wohns, speakers at the 2019 event included:

• Scott Blumenthal, MD, of Plano-based Texas Back Institute
• Jens Chapman, MD, of Seattle-based Swedish Medical Center
• Stephen Hochschuler, MD, of Plano-based Texas Back Institute
• Mick Perez-Cruet, MD, of Southfield-based Michigan Head & Spine Institute
