Dr. Douglas Constant performs MIS decompression surgery with Vertiflex device: 4 notes

Spine

Bradenton, Fla.-based Coastal Orthopedics' Douglas Constant, MD, is performing minimally invasive indirect decompression surgery on spinal stenosis patients.

Four things to know:

1. Dr. Constant is a board-certified interventional pain management physician. He is one of 250 interventional pain management physicians nationwide who is trained in this type of therapy.

2. Since May 2018, Dr. Constant and fellow Coastal Orthopedics pain management specialists Gennady Gekht, MD, and Justin Sirianni, MD, have performed nearly 25 surgeries using Vertiflex's Superion Interspinous Spacer, a minimally invasive lumbar decompression device designed to relieve chronic pain caused by spinal stenosis.

3. The Superior Interspinous Spacer is implanted between the spinous process. Once it is in place, the spacer is opened up. It is designed to hold the two backbones apart and allow for spinal canal decompression by acting as a support column.

4. "It's unique that we are able to offer a procedure that is not only less invasive but non-destructive because we're not removing bone," said Dr. Constant. "This does not replace the role of a surgeon because that's still an important role. This is a specific therapy that has been well-placed in the market for treating spinal stenosis."
