Wyoming neurosurgeon performs new spine procedure: 4 takeaways

Spine

Neurosurgeon Steven Beer, MD, was among the first surgeons in the U.S. to perform spinal surgery using the OsseoScrew spinal fixation system, according to ShortGo.

Here are four takeaways:

1. Alphatec designed the spinal fixation system to improve the surgeon's ability to secure a patient's spine when the bone is weak.

2. OsseoScrew systems have been used in Europe. The FDA granted the system approval in 2017.

3. Dr. Beer helped Alphatec develop the spinal fixation system. He performed the surgery on a 69-year-old patient who had lower back pain.

4. Dr. Beer performed the surgery at Cheyenne (Wyo.) Regional Medical Center Nov. 29. He also practices at Wyoming Spine & Neurosurgery in Cheyenne.
