Surgeons and physicians from across the country are reacting to an Oct. 7 NRA tweet telling physicians to "stay in their lane," according to WFYI Indianapolis.

The American College of Physicians first released a position paper recommending a public health approach to gun violence. The paper called for funding research, criminal background checks for gun purchases and other policy changes. In turn, they claimed physicians would see fewer firearm injuries and deaths.

Responding to the paper, the NRA tweeted, "Someone should tell self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane."

Physicians then turned to Twitter using the hashtags #ThisIsMyLane and #ThisIsOurLane to express their firsthand views on gun violence. Neurosurgeon Ben Rodgers, MD, is among the physicians responding to the tweet.

Dr. Rodgers is a professor at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. In an interview with WFYI Indianapolis, Dr. Rodgers detailed his experience treating patients affected by gun violence.
