Spine

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., suggested the CDC needs more funding to combat a rare polio-like illness that is rampaging across the nation, according to Fox 5.

Here are four things to know:

1. Currently, the CDC is monitoring 116 acute flaccid myelitis cases in 31 states. Two cases are in New York.

2. AFM typically affects children and can cause paralysis. The CDC began monitoring these cases after an outbreak in 2014.

3. "It's a condition that affects the brain and spinal cord," family physician Jennifer Caudle, MD, told Fox 5. "And in children, which is where we're mostly see this condition, it's caused symptoms such as weakness of the arms, weakness of the legs, droopy eyelids, problems swallowing and things of that nature."

4. Between August 2014 and Nov. 23, the CDC reported 440 AFM cases in the nation.
