Adult spinal deformity patients frailer, have greater comorbidities than other spine patients — 4 study insights

Spine

Surgery led to favorable outcomes in adult patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis and lumbar spinal canal stenosis regardless of frailty or comorbidity, according to an article in Spine.

Here are four things to know:

1. Study authors retrospectively reviewed elective spine surgery results for:

  • 156 patients with adult spinal deformities
  • 152 patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis
  • 173 patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis

2. Researchers found the Modified Frailty Index and Charlson Comorbidity Index were much worse in adult spinal deformity patients than in others.

3. The two-year major complications rate increased with frailty in ASD patients but not in the other patient types.

4. Study authors concluded treating comorbidities preoperatively, along with careful patient selection, may improve surgical treatment outcomes for ASD patients.
