Firefighters to raise $150K for spinal muscular atrophy research – 3 insights

Buffalo (N.Y.) firefighters are set to collect $150,000 in donations in an annual campaign to fight spinal muscular atrophy, WIVB4.com reports.

Here are three things to know:

1. Spinal muscular atrophy is a degenerative neuromuscular disease and the leading genetic cause of death in children under two years old.

2. The firefighters average $30,000 in donations during the Spinal Muscular Atrophy Research Team's annual Fill the Boot campaign. They are on track to hit $150,000 for Fill the Boot 2018.

3. Founded in 2008, SMART has raised more than $1.2 million for research.
