Here are eight things for spinal surgeons to know for April 19, 2018.

DePuy Synthes Q1 sales up 1.1%, spine drops 8.9% after Codman divestiture
In the first quarter of 2017, Johnson & Johnson reported their orthopedics business, DePuy Synthes, had a slight 1.1 percent growth over the same period last year. The company's spine business sales had the largest decline, at 8.9 percent, reaching $804 million. Trauma sales were up 8.4 percent to $696 million. Hip sales grew 3.1 percent and knee sales dropped 2.8 percent to $363 million and $387 million, respectively.

ISASS names Belgian spine surgeon 2018-19 president
The International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery named Marek Szpalski, MD, 2018-19 president at its annual meeting last week. Dr. Szpalski is chairman of the department of orthopedic trauma surgery at Brussels, Belgium-based IRIS South Teaching Hospitals. He also serves as associate professor at Free University of Brussels and an adjunct associate professor of orthopedics at New York City-based New York University.

Stryker's spine division to drive Q1 sales
Stryker's neurotechnology and spine division is anticipated to see growth in the first quarter of 2018, pushing the company's overall growth, according to Zacks. Recently, Stryker's spine segment has seen a push in demand for target coil and 3-D printed interbody tritanium products. Stryker's last reported quarter put spine and neurotechnology sales at $586 million, up 10.3 percent year-over-year.

The highest paid CEOs in healthcare
The CEOs of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare, Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare and Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreens Boots Alliance received some of the highest compensation rates among chief executives of larger U.S. companies, according to a recent survey by Equilar. 100% of patients fused at 12-month follow up in Spineology clinical trial
John Chi, MD, presented 12-month outcomes data from Spineology's SCOUT clinical trial. An investigational device exemption study, SCOUT sought to assess safety and effectiveness outcomes in instrumented lumbar interbody fusion procedures for degenerative disc disease treatment. The study investigated Spineology's OptiMesh, a porous graft containment mesh. At 12-months, 100 percent of the patients experienced fusion.

Dr. Hooman Melamed performs live-saving spine surgery on reality TV star Abby Lee Miller
Orthopedic spine surgeon Hooman Melamed, MD, performed emergency spinal surgery April 17 on former Dance Moms star Abby Lee Miller at Cedars-Sinai Marina Del Ray (Calif.) Hospital. Ms. Miller came to the ER for "excruciating neck pain" and weakness in her arm, Dr. Melamed told People. Dr. Melamed found an infection had spread from the bottom of her neck to her lower back. DOJ cracks down on health system performing outpatient surgeries as inpatient; Banner Health to pay $18M+ settlement
The DOJ is targeting hospitals and health systems for performing outpatient procedures in the inpatient setting, where they can charge a higher rate. Phoenix-based Banner Health, a 28-hospital system, agreed to pay more than $18 million to resolve allegations 12 hospitals admitted patients for procedures who could have gone to the less-costly outpatient setting. US could be short up to 120k physicians by 2030
By 2030, the U.S. may be short as many as 120,000 physicians, according to an Association of American Medical Colleges report. The U.S. may see a primary care physician shortage of between 14,800 and 49,300 physicians and non-primary care physician shortage of between 33,800 and 72,700 physicians.
