Loma Linda (Calif.) University neurosurgeons Venkatraman Sadanand, MD, PhD, and Daniel J. DiLorenzo, MD, PhD, addressed the Congressional Neuroscience Caucus March 21, advocating for greater investment in neuroscience technologies.
Here are four things to know.
1. Drs. Sadanand and DiLorenzo were among six presenters at the 7th Annual Brain Mapping Day on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
2. According to Dr. Sadanand, associate professor at LLU School of Medicine and attending pediatric neurosurgeon, neurological disorders account for 13 percent of the global disease burden, while cardiovascular disorders accounts for 3 percent and cancer 10 percent.
3. Dr. Sadanand claimed the annual cost of care for patients with neurological disorders is approximately $400 billion and is expected to exceed $1 trillion over the next decade. According to Dr. Sadanand, the industry is working across companies to discover treatments, but "the problem is we are not able to bring the research to the patient at this time." He proposed implementing a Brain Technology and Innovation Park.
4. Dr. DiLorenzo, assistant professor at LLU School of Medicine, inventor and entrepreneur, described the benefits of investing in new neuroscience technologies. Neurological disorders likely have the greatest impact on patient quality of life and ROI for treatment, he claimed, as the goal is to return them to the workforce.
