Retired orthopedic spine surgeon and former circus performer Neil Kahanovitz, MD, led a group of investors that bought the New York City-based Big Apple Circus, The Washington Post reports.

Here are three things to know.

1. Dr. Kahanovitz received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore.

2. During his time as a medical student, Dr. Kahanovitz also worked as a circus performer. He convinced the UM School of Medicine dean to allow him to attend schools across the nation during his last two years of medical school when he went out on performances.

3. Dr. Kahanovitz practiced in Washington, D.C., for a few years and operated on three Supreme Court justices — Anthony M. Kennedy, Byron R. White and William H. Rehnquist — and served as the Cirque du Soleil physician when it came to the area.
