Orthopedic surgeon Mary Neal, MD, is considering challenging Rep. Liz Chaney, R-Wyo., for Wyoming's seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, according to a Jackson Hole News & Guide report.

Here are four things to know about Dr. Neal:

1. Dr. Neal, along with a few other challengers, would run on a platform that the GOP has lost touch with its constituents in the state.

2. She is an orthopedic spine surgeon at St. John's Medical Center in Jackson, Wyo. Dr. Neal earned her medical degree at UCLA Medical Center and completed her spine surgery fellowship at LAC-Rancho Los Amigos (Calif.) Medical Center.

3. Dr. Neal published the book "To Heaven and Back: A Doctor's Extraordinary Account of Her Death, Heaven, Angels, and Life Again: A True Story" which details her kayaking accident in South America and how the experience affected her life.

4. Dr. Neal is a member of St. John's Medical Center's Peak Spine Center, which opened in February 2017. The average stay for spine surgery patients at St. John's is 1.9 days, shorter than the 2.7-day national average, and the hospital has a 94 percent patient satisfaction rating among spine surgery patients.
