A new study published in Spine examines the 30-day complications after adult deformity surgery.

Study authors examined data from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database from 2010 to 2014 including information for patients who underwent adult deformity surgery. There were 5,805 patients who met inclusion criteria the authors split into four different age groups. Study authors found:

Older age was an independent risk factor for longer hospital length of stay. They were also more likely to have all complications, including renal complications, urinary tract infection, postoperative transfusion and unplanned readmission.

"Age has been shown to be an independent risk factor for increased length of stay, all complications, renal complications, urinary tract infection, transfusion and unplanned readmission," concluded study authors.
