Massachusetts hospital opens new neurosurgery program: 5 things to know

Hallmark Health's Melrose (Mass.)-Wakefield Hospital unveiled its neurosurgery program in August, according to Wicked Local Melrose.

Here are five things to know:

 

1. The neurosurgery program came about from the affiliation between Hallmark Health and Wellforce in early 2017.

 

2. Mina Safain, MD, heads the neurosurgery program. He meets with patients and performs surgeries at Melrose-Wakefield and performs complex procedures at Boston-based Wellforce's Tufts Medical Center.

 

3. Dr. Safain said they launched the neurosurgery program in Melrose to offer a convenient care location for local patients so they don't have to make the trip to Boston.

 

4. He specializes in pituitary and brain tumors; meningiomas, minimally invasive spine surgery; complex and reconstructive spine surgery; spinal microsurgery and spinal trauma.

 

5. Dr. Safain completed his pituitary and neuro-endoscopic surgery fellowship at Boston-based Brigham and Women's Hospital.
