Spine

Louis Jenis, MD, performed spine surgery on Boston Red Sox pitcher Robbie Ross Jr., according to a Mass Live report.

Here are five things to know:

1. The Mets placed their left-handed reliever on the disabled list June 1 with elbow inflammation. He was then placed on the 60-day DL with the back and shoulder injury.

2. Dr. Jenis performed a microdiscectomy on Mr. Ross' lumbar spine at Newton (Mass.) Wellesley Spine Center to relieve the pitcher's pain.

3. Mr. Ross will be out for the rest of the season; however he expects to return for 2018 spring training.

4. Mr. Ross will be a free agent at the end of the season. While he appeared in just eight games this season, Mr. Ross was an integral part of the Boston Red Sox in 2015 and 2016, according to the report.

5. Dr. Jenis joined Newton-Wellesley Hospital in 2008. He completed fellowship training at Milwaukee-based Medical College of Wisconsin.
