Dr. John Caruso joins WVU Medicine — 9 insights

Morgantown, W.Va.-based WVU Medicine and Martinsburg, W.Va.-based Berkeley Medical Center are boosting their neuroscience and neuromuscular offerings, according to WEPM.com.

1. John Caruso, MD, joined WVU Medicine's neurosurgery department and will serve as director of neurological surgery at Berkeley Medical Center.

 

2. He previously served as president of Parkway Brain and Spine in Hagerstown, Md.

 

3. He specializes in complex, traumatic, degenerative and oncological spinal conditions as well as intracranial and peripheral nerve conditions. Dr. Caruso performs minimally invasive surgery.

 

4. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Caruso has served as the president of the Maryland Neurosurgical Society since 2012.

 

5. He is an alternate member of the Governor's Task Force on Malpractice Reform. Throughout his career, Dr. Caruso has helped craft legislation to reimburse physicians for trauma care delivery in Maryland.

 

6. Dr. Caruso was previously a board member of Blue Chip Surgical Associates in Cincinnati.

 

7. He serves as the Maryland representative for the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies.

 

8. Dr. Caruso completed postgraduate training at Norfolk-based Eastern Virginia Medical School and Albuquerque-based University of New Mexico Graduate School of Medicine.

 

9. WVU Medicine will open another neurosurgery office in Martinsburg in September.
