Mallinckrodt, Massachusetts Health & Hospital Association launch Pain Stewardship Program — 6 things to know

Spine

Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals teamed up with the Massachusetts Health & Hospital Association to create the Pain Stewardship Program.

Here are six things to know:

1. Mallinckrodt and MHA worked with a multidisciplinary team of advisors to create the program, which seeks to educate hospital stakeholders on multimodal analgesia-based acute pain management.

2. The program's goal is to offer assistance with limiting in-hospital opioid use and length of stay.

3. The Pain Stewardship Program leverages evidence-based pain management tools to analyze current hospital protocols to pinpoint improvement areas.

4. A multimodal analgesia program combines two or more analgesic techniques to deliver pain relief with fewer opioids.

5. A multimodal analgesia strategy may decrease opioid-related adverse drug events; shorten LOS; lessen pain during rest and activity; and boost patient satisfaction.

6. MHA created the Substance Use Disorder Prevention and Treatment Task Force to help hospitals and providers establish operational and clinical best practices.

"As part of our commitment to safe and effective acute pain management, Mallinckrodt will work collaboratively with hospital stakeholders to provide educational resources about best practices, and increase provider and patient education on acute pain management that can help improve patient outcomes and satisfaction," said Steven Romano, MD, executive vice president and chief scientific officer, Mallinckrodt.
