Last month the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery elected Jeffrey Goldstein, MD, president.
Dr. Goldstein is chief of the Spine Service for Education Program and director of the spine fellowship program in NYU Langone Medical Center's department of orthopedics. He has served on the ISASS board of directors since 2011. "We will continue our efforts to advance the science and art of spine surgery and educate practitioners from around the world," said Dr. Goldstein.
During his tenure as president, Dr. Goldstein will focus on growing membership, consolidating the Society for Minimal Incision Spine Surgery and the Association of Collaborative Spine Research as well as offer educational opportunities for spine surgeons. Finally, he plans to broaden the organization's infrastructure to involve more of the membership.
The organization's events, publications, advocacy and policy arms aim to support spine surgeons and patients from around the world. "ISASS' annual meeting has become the place where spine surgeons exchange ideas," said Dr. Goldstein. "I was interested in hearing the conversation between surgeons from six continents, as well as surgeons from around the U.S.A. Each surgeon and scientist learns from another and shares new techniques and technologies with the goal of improving patient outcome."
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Goldstein is a researcher and serves on the editorial and advisory boards of The Spine Journal and The International Journal of Spine Surgery.
He earned his medical degree from State University of New York Downstate Medical Center at Brooklyn and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland. His additional training includes the Maryland Spine Fellowship.
