A study recently published in Spine reveals the factors most likely to cause hospital acquired conditions in adult spinal deformity surgery patients.
Here are four things to know:
1. Out of 5,819 patients included in the study, 313 (5.4 percent) had HAC.
2. The following factors are associated with developing HAC:
- Age
- Functional status
- Surgical approach
- Utilization of osteotomies
- Steroid Use
- Obesity
- Operation time
3. HACs provide an incentive for hospitals and ASCs to improve patient safety. They are subject to a nonpayment policy by CMS.
4. HACs make postoperative morbidity and mortality rates in the ASD population more severe.
