2-level cervical disc replacement with Medtronic Prestige LP just as effective, safe as ACDF

Megan Wood -

A study published in Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine compared 24-month outcomes for two-level cervical disc replacement using the Medtronic Prestige LP device versus anterior cervical discectomy and fusion surgery.

The study included 209 patients undergoing two-level cervical disc replacements, or cervical arthroplasty, with a Prestige LP, and 188 patients undergoing ACDF between June 2006 and November 2007.

Todd H. Lanman, MD, Matthew F. Gornet, MD, Jeffrey R. McConnell, MD, J. Kenneth Burkus, MD, Randall F. Dryer, MD, and Scott D. Hodges, DO, authored the study.

At 24 months, patients undergoing two-level cervical disc replacements saw a superior overall success rate (81.4 percent) compared to those undergoing ACDF (69.4 percent).

The researchers concluded two-level cervical disc replacement with a Prestige LP device proved equally effective and safe as ACDF for treating cervical disc degeneration disease at two adjacent disc levels at the 24-month postoperative follow-up.
