Study: Oblique lateral lumbar interbody fusion vs. open transformational lumbar interbody fusion

Spine

Researchers analyzed the outcomes associated with Inspired Spine's oblique lumbar lateral interbody fusion, according to U.S. National Library of Medicine. The Inspired OLLIF involves a surgeon approaching the disc through Kambin's Triangle, assisted by bilateral fluoroscopy.

The study involved 69 consecutive OLLIF surgeries on 128 levels as well as 55 consecutive open transformational lumbar interbody fusions on 125 levels.

Here are five takeaways:

1. The study revealed a mean surgery time of 69 minutes for a single-level OLLIF.

2. The researchers noted open TLIF surgery took almost twice as long (135 minutes) to perform as single-level OLLIF.

3. A single-level OLLIF also saw a mean blood loss of 29 ml, representing an 80 percent decrease from mean open TLIF blood loss.

4. Open TLIF involved a mean blood loss of 355 ml.

5. Researchers concluded OLLIF decreases surgery times and eliminates difficulties associated with open fusions. Therefore, OLLIF presents a safer and less-demanding surgery than open or minimally invasive TLIF.
