Patrick Hayes, MD, of OrthoCarolina, in Shelby, North Carolina, recently traveled to Leon, Nicaragua, to hold a clinic and see patients at the Hedodora teaching hospital.
Here's what you should know.
1. Dr. Hayes was a team leader with not-for-profit Cooperación Ortopédica Americano Nicargüense.
2. Dr. Hayes made the trip with 14 other people; two surgeons, an anesthesiologist, a floor nurse and 10 non-medical personnel.
3. At the clinic, the physicians saw patients and performed surgery while educating the residents and staff about the arthroscopic and surgical techniques.
4. The group donated a pump and both arthroscopic and open surgical instruments to the hospital. The anesthesiologist donated medicine and equipment to properly deliver anesthesia.
5. As part of the trip, the group complete several service projects at the hospital cleaning and fixing the clinic, and providing non-surgical equipment to the nursing staff.
The group also visited an orphanage.
