Spine

Here, three spine surgeons discuss their favorite leisure activities over the summer.

Ask Spine Surgeons is a weekly series of questions posed to spine surgeons around the country about clinical, business and policy issues affecting spine care. We invite all spine surgeon and specialist responses.

Question: What are your favorite summer activities?

Brian R. Gantwerker, MD, The Craniospinal Center of Los Angeles: My family and I love driving up the coast. We enjoy heading up to Santa Barbara or Monterey to cool off. We also enjoy getting out to downtown L.A. to enjoy the summer festivals, or going to old L.A. on Olvera Street and getting some legit street tacos and empanadas.

Richard D. Guyer, MD, President, Texas Back Institute, Plano: Taking car rides in the north Texas countryside to exercise my cars, visiting the small Texan towns and eating a nice Texas barbecue lunch. Gardening on Saturdays and then laying in my hammock in the trees letting it swing me to sleep as I drink a nice cold beer.  I also enjoy traveling and photography. And lastly, swimming with the family and especially my three little grandchildren who swim like fish.

Richard Kube, MD, Founder, CEO, Prairie Spine & Pain Institute, Peoria, Ill.: I try to spend as much time with the family as possible. The kids are out of school and interested in doing various activities. We don't tend to travel much, with their camps and sports, but there is a lot of time outdoors together.
