DISC Sports & Spine Center: 5 ways to avoid injuries when returning to exercise

Spine

Marina Del Ray, Calif.-based DISC Sports & Spine Center's orthopedic surgeon Andrew Bulczynski, MD, provided recommendations on how to minimize your risk of injury when resuming exercise.

Here are five ways to avoid injuries.

1. Take it easy. Don't rush into an intense workout your first day. Reduce your exercise and see how your body responds over time.

2. Stretch. Engage in a one to two minute warm-up and then a short pre-stretch. Then, begin your exercise activity and finish with a formal stretch.

3. Use appropriate equipment. Make sure you have appropriate shoes and other equipment to avoid injury. Footwear should fit properly, and don't use shoes that have racked up hundreds of miles.

4. Hydrate. Drink a good deal of fluids hours prior to exercise and stay hydrated while you work out. If engaging in strenuous activity, consume a sports drink with electrolytes.

5. Be conscious of the weather. If it's hot, stay hydrated and adjust your workouts based on the temperature.
