A new article published in The Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine examines minimally invasive tubular microdiscectomy for recurrent lumbar disc herniation.

The researchers examined patients who underwent minimally invasive tubular microdiscectomy for recurrent lumbar disc herniation. The researchers found:

1. The average operating time was 90 minutes.

2. Visual analogue score for leg pain was reduced significantly from 5.9 preoperatively to 1.7 postoperatively.

3. There was a 90 percent overall success rate — patients reporting good or excellent on the Macnab criteria.

4. Five patients reported incidental durotomy in the study without neurological consequences, CSF fistula or negative influence to the clinical outcome.

5. Two patients reported instability.

“The clinical outcome of minimally invasive tubular microdiscectomy is comparable to the reported success rates of other minimally invasive techniques,” concluded the study authors.
