Wisconsin tackles painkiller abuse — 5 key notes

Through its "Doses of Reality" campaign, Wisconsin officials are raising awareness about the appropriate storing and disposing of prescription painkillers to reduce prescription painkiller abuse in the state, according to Weau.com.

Here are five key notes:

 

1. The state has suffered more deaths from opiate overdoses than car crashes.

 

2. Individuals ages 12 and 25 are primarily affected by opiate abuse.

 

3. National data shows nearly 70 percent of individuals who become addictedto heroin were previously addicted to painkillers.

 

4. Additionally, 70 percent of people who obtain opiates get them from family or friends.

 

5. The Department of Justice is hosting "Drug Take Back Day" where people can safely dispose of their pills.
