Mayo spine surgeon travels to Gaza Strip, West Bank to provide care

Ahmad Nassr, MD, associate professor of orthopedics at Mayo in Rochester, Minn., has spent time as a visiting surgeon working with the Palestinian Children's relief fund over the past few years, according to a LaCrosse Tribune report.

Dr. Nassr is a spine surgeon by training and on his six surgical mission trips to serve underserved children in the Gaza Strip and West Bank he provided care for several types of spine conditions and injuries.

 

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Nassr has engaged in research and co-authored several articles on spinal disorders and treatments. During a 2011 trip to the Gaza strip, Medtronic donated $1 million worth of medical equipment, which allowed Dr. Nassr and his team to perform 30 spinal surgeries and other procedures, according to a Post Bulletin report.

 

Dr. Nassr earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. His additional training includes a fellowship in orthopedic spine surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
