Spine disease may increase risk of developing acute anterior uveitis — 10 notes

Spine

Patients suffering from ankylosing spondylitis have a great risk of developing acute anterior uveitis, according to MedPage Today.

Here are 10 notes:

1. Patients with AS have an almost 16-fold greater risk of developing acute anterior uveitis than the general population.

2. Other risks associated with AS include inflammatory bowel disease and psoriasis, according to a report by Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.

3. Researchers analyzed data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink and identified 4,101 patients diagnosed with AS from 1987 to 2012, matching the patients with 28,591 controls.

4. The mean age of the patients with AS was 44 and two-thirds were male.

5. The three most common extra-articular manifestations were acute anterior uveitis, inflammatory bowel disease and psoriasis. A sufficient percent of these manifestations were present at the time of AS diagnosis.

6. The incidence rate was 4 percent for inflammatory bowel disease compared with 0.6 percent among controls, rising 7.5 percent after 20 years.

7. Psoriasis had an incidence of 4.7 percent compared with 2.6 percent of the controls, increasing 10.1 percent at 20 years.

8. Patients are at the highest risk of developing extra-articular manifestations during the first year after AS diagnosis.

9. Researchers found the presence of inflammatory bowel disease and psoriasis to be helpful in the diagnosis of spondyloarthrisis, but the association was weaker for the ocular inflammatory condition.

10. Researchers claimed awareness about disease manifestation is pertinent in choosing treatment options for patients.
