A minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion operation is receiving press from Newswise.com for its faster patient pain recovery time and less blood loss during the operation.
Performed by Loyola University Medical Center's Beejal Amin, MD, the surgeon spreads and dilates the muscles to obtain access to the lumbar spine, instead of cutting through the paraspinal muscles.
Dr. Amin placed a bone graft-filled implant into an empty disc between the vertebrae before he implanted rods and screws to hold a patient's vertebrae together.
