Having two attending spine surgeons in the operating room during a procedure can produce better patient outcomes, according to a study done at the University of California San Francisco. The study was led by neurosurgeon Christopher Ames, MD, and orthopedic surgeon Vedat Deviren, MD.

While most spinal surgeries have a team of physicians led by a single attending surgeon, the data showed two surgeons perform complex, high-risk procedures resulted in shorter surgeries, few complications, less blood loss and shorter hospital stays.

Researchers noted the technique of having multiple attending surgeons is used for other specialties, such as cardiac surgery, but their study was among the first of its kind to measure effectiveness for spine surgery.
