Price does not dictate effectiveness, Virtua study finds — 4 key facts

New Jersey-based Virtua Health researchers found a $16-per-dose drug was equally as effective at pain relief as a new $402-per-dose drug, according to NJ BIZ.

The study analyzed 207 patients who had total knee replacements for chronic forms of arthritis. Some patients received a Novocain-type drug, the traditional option, and others were given the newer local anesthesia.

Here are four key facts:

1. The findings indicated both drugs were equally effective at alleviating pain, which is important as patients who experience severe pain recover much more slowly.

2. John Matsinger, MD, chief clinical officer, Virtua, said, “This study exemplifies how Virtua continues to provide the best quality and most cost-effective care. The JRI team found that reducing and managing pain after knee replacement is possible with a medication that is both affordable and effective.”

3. The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons granted Virtua’s six-person research team a national award on Nov. 7.

4. The team was selected as one of 60 teams to be recognized from 1,300 submissions for the award.
